Yield Enhancement Series Kickoff: Getting Back to Basics

Yield is simply a metric that in any other industry would be called a close ratio. If you’re a sales manager in any other industry and your close ratio isn’t where you want it be, you examine the effectiveness of your strategies and execution in both marketing and selling.

Why should it be any different for higher education?

Yield-Enhancement-SeriesIn business-to-business or business-to-consumer marketing and sales the goal is always to understand the needs and preferences of the prospect and present the value of your product or service in the context what that consumer perceives as being valuable.

Why should it be any different for higher education?

Let’s stipulate that higher education is different in so many ways from other industries that sell products and services to consumers. With that stipulation, let’s also recognize that 4-year non-profit public and private colleges and universities continue to exist only when their income exceeds their expenses.

Marketing serves to generate interest among prospective students but it can only go so far in converting interest into enrollment. At some point the sale needs to be made. In higher education, that most often happens when a prospective student interacts with an admission counselor, a faculty member, a financial aid representative, a coach, a campus, a current student or even another prospective student.

It is these human interactions that have the largest impact on yield. And in so many colleges and universities across the United States, this is the area that is most often overlooked.

Rather than focusing on all things that can be done to improve the interaction with prospective students and families during the college shopping process, so many colleges default to increasing the size of their prospect and applicant pools with the hope that an estimated increase in enrollment will justify the substantial cost of generating and processing an admittedly softer pool.

The sad truth for many colleges employing this strategy is that they find themselves working even harder to process a larger pool of students with the same systems and personnel they’ve used in the past. That just puts additional pressure on an already pressured process.

The solution is to focus first on what’s happening at ground level. How rich is your interaction with students in your naturally occurring pool? Are you providing great pre-enrollment customer service? Are your counselors well-trained to have the types of conversations that will generate excitement among prospective students about coming to your institution? Are prospective students having the types of campus visit experiences that will get them excited about your institution over all others?

These are the essential practices that, when executed properly, ensure the highest yield from your pool of prospective students. Attempting to fit any new yield initiative on top of a malfunctioning base is a waste of time and resources.

In this new blog series, we will provide information and examples of strategies and tools that can be used by any college that wishes to increase its yield efficiency using the resources that are currently available to them. Stay tuned.

Sneak Peek: New Findings Point to Factors Impacting Yield

We will return after the first of the year with a new series of posts relating to yield enhancement. The new series will present highly useful information and practices that will help everyone connected with student recruitment (even those who don’t believe they are connected to student recruitment).

SneakPeekCurtainIn a study we released earlier this year called “The Value Proposition” we found that a student’s excitement about attending a specific college was a more powerful driver of enrollment than either cost or the perceived quality of the college. Feelings impact yield.

We will soon be releasing the findings from a subsequent study, “The Excitement Factor” that focuses solely on how excitement is created. Our deep dive on the topic provides even stronger proof that yield is so closely associated with student feelings. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the findings:

  • One-third of college bound students say that “excitement about attending” had more influence over their college selection than did facts about the college.
  • Four in ten students replaced their “first choice” college with another school at some point in their college shopping process and over 25% said it was because another school excited them more.
  • Over 40% of students say they experienced an “aha moment” – an exact moment in time and place where they had a rush of excitement or gut feel that a particular college was the right one for them.
  • Thousands of students in the study described things that colleges do to try to generate excitement that, unfortunately, have the opposite effect.
  • When asked if colleges had taken a personal interest in them at any point in the recruiting process, two-thirds said “No” or “Don’t Remember” (in our view “Don’t remember” is the same as “No”).

These findings relate to your ability to yield the volume and types of students you desire. When we launch our new Yield Enhancement Series we’ll examine a number of ways you can control the interactions you have with prospective students, how you can measure the quality and impact of the experiences they’ve had (and will have) with you, the role counselors play in improving yield, the role others play, and much more.

The Counselor Training Series: Are You Adding Stress for Your Prospective Students?

[In part 11 of the Counselor Training Blog Series we look at how a college can differentiate itself by relieving some of their prospective students’ stress.]

CounselorTrainingSeries270x150Deciding which college to attend is a stressful process for many students and parents.

Who would think that a college would ADD anxiety to an inherently stressful process? No college would do so intentionally, but as an industry, we do it all the time.

Through our pre-enrollment research, we communicate with hundreds of thousands of prospective students and parents every year. Here are the 6 stress-inducing actions most often cited about the college admission’s industry:http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-images-stressed-out-image9379164

  1.  That we communicate poorly
  2.  That we’re slow to offer or reject admission
  3.  That we have burdensome processes
  4.  That admissions people are not responsive
  5.  We are poorly organized, and
  6.  In some cases, they believe we’re being DISHONEST

Ouch!!!

Are you ready for some good news? Since these things happen more than you can imagine, it gives us an opportunity to differentiate ourselves by doing the opposite. You can differentiate your institution by RELIEVING, rather than ADDING, stress to the college selection process.

Here’s how.

Based on our research, this is what students and parents say you can do to relieve their stress and anxiety during the college selection process:

  • Communicate well. They need information that’s relevant to THEM.
  • Provide helpful advice and counsel throughout the college shopping process.
  • BE RESPONSIVE. Return calls and emails promptly.
  • Make decisions promptly.
  • Treat each prospective student as you would expect and hope to be treated.
  • Above all, show a sincere interest in the student.

These may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many colleges fail to practice these proven behaviors that will serve a prospective student and parent well. And, it’s not isolated to the admissions office. It extends to every department on campus.

A recent national study we conducted on this topic revealed that colleges are LOSING enrollments because of the poor customer service they deliver during the college shopping process. Students and parents see the service they get pre-enrollment as predictive of what they would get IF they enroll. (See the report here.)

So, think about the pre-enrollment service you are giving. If you make it better – campus-wide – you’ll be more successful in your enrollment efforts.

The Counselor Training Series: Tap into the Excitement Factor

[In part 10 of the Counselor Training Blog Series we look at how a prospective student’s excitement about attending your college influences their final decision.]

Research shows that when a student is in the process of selecting a college, three factors generally come into play:

Cost, perceived quality of the institution, and his or her excitement about attending.

Most students consider each of these factors important but the key question is, which factor is the most important?

CounselorTrainingSeries270x150So I ask you, which one of these factors do you think is most predictive of enrollment?

If you said excitement, you’re right. The single factor that is most strongly correlated to likelihood of enrollment is the student’s excitement about attending. It’s more strongly correlated to enrollment – by a factor of two – than either cost or perceived quality of the college.

It makes perfect sense.

How many of us have bought something that our rational brain was telling us we shouldn’t buy because it’s too expensive? But we bought it anyway because we just had to have it. The excitement of owning it, using it, or wearing it was the most powerful force that drove our action to buy.

The same holds true for students in selecting a college.

Research shows that when students are faced with a choice of colleges that they perceive to be generally alike (believe me this happens more frequently than we’d like to admit), they will choose the one they are most excited about. They will naturally find ways to rationalize away a higher cost or lower perceived quality.

Colleges and counselors that are most successful at recruiting are masters of understanding each prospective student and generating their excitement.

They uncover what the student wants and how they will feel if they get it. They put prospective students in the environments and with the people who are most likely to create that spark of excitement, that “aha” moment when the student not only knows but FEELS that they have found their college.

So, when you’re recruiting students, don’t just find out what they want. Find out what will make them feel that your college is the right choice for them. Find out what will excite them.

Recently, over 40 colleges participated in a comprehensive national co-sponsored study on this very topic conducted by Longmire and Company. The results of the study have yielded clear findings on how student excitement develops about a particular college and the role that the college plays in its development.
